My Self-Publishing Journey as a Debut Indie Author

Self-publishing is a wild ride — equal parts exciting, overwhelming, and downright confusing at times. In this post, I’m sharing my journey as a debut indie author, from the highs of creative freedom to the struggles of figuring it all out on my own. If you’re considering going the self-publishing route, this one’s for you!

Ever since I was a kid, I've dreamed of publishing my own book. I was the kind of child who would sit for hours, sellotaping sheets of paper together to make my own homemade books. Technically, my self-publishing journey started at the ambitious age of about 10, when my mum paid to have the first ever story I wrote from start to finish printed — though I'm not sure that entirely counts!

Fast forward to age 26, and I finally wrote the novel I'd always imagined — The Silent Bond. Exactly one week before I turned 27, I officially self-published my debut novel. The decision to self-publish wasn't immediate; initially, I envisioned going the traditional route. But after some deep-dive research, I quickly realised how much creative control authors often sacrifice to land a traditional publishing deal. That thought alone was enough to make me pivot.

As a single mother on a tight budget, my journey as an indie author hasn't exactly been conventional. Indie publishing already requires wearing many hats, but I took this to an extreme. I became my own editor, formatter, and marketer — roles typically filled by professionals. And let me tell you, editing your own book? It's every bit as soul-destroying as it sounds. Draft after draft, each edit dragged on and nearly drove me to madness. But I survived it!

Then came the cover. Oh, the dreaded cover. Initially, I tried designing it myself. Three times, actually. And each time, after hours spent, I scrapped it — because honestly, nothing I created felt worthy of the story I'd poured my heart into. Letting go and deciding to outsource the design was tough. But connecting with Andrew, an incredibly talented graphic designer, changed the game. Collaborating closely with him allowed me to stay involved at every step and resulted in a cover I'm truly proud of.

The Hardest Parts of Self-Publishing

There’s a reason people work with agents, editors, and publishers — because doing everything yourself is a lot. Some of the biggest challenges I faced are:

  • Figuring out formatting – Turns out, getting a book to look professional on Kindle and in print isn’t as simple as copy-pasting from Word. Who knew?

  • Marketing from scratch – Without a publisher’s marketing team, it’s up to you to get people to actually find (and buy) your book. Self-promotion feels weird and vulnerable, but I've slowly learned to embrace it.

  • Editing – Did I mention it was soul-destroying?

  • The mental rollercoaster – Some days, I felt on top of the world. Other days, I questioned everything and wondered why I ever thought this was a good idea.

The Best Parts of Self-Publishing

Despite the struggles, the journey taught me resilience and reinforced my passion for storytelling. Holding The Silent Bond in my hands was a surreal, beautiful moment. It has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. Here’s what made it worth it:

  • Holding my book in my hands – Seeing my story go from a file on my laptop to an actual physical book? Unreal.

  • Connecting with readers – Every time someone tells me they loved The Silent Bond, it reminds me why I did this in the first place.

  • The “I did that” feeling – Self-publishing is all me. I made it happen. And that’s something no one can take away.

Would I Do It Again?

Absolutely. In fact, I am doing it again. I’ve got more books in the works, and now that I know what to expect, I feel way more prepared.

If you’re thinking about self-publishing, my biggest advice is this: go for it — but do your research first. It’s a learning curve, but if you’re passionate about your book, it’s worth every challenge. Remember: your story deserves to be told, no matter your budget or experience. So, start now — even if it means wearing all those hats yourself. You've got this.
